Sound Engineer ~ Producer ~ Musician
I got my start in sound engineering while taking music and business courses at
Harris Institute for the Arts. At that point, I didn't really know what direction
my life was about to take. I knew I wanted to do something music related.
Eventually, I began working as a live sound engineer for the Flying Cloud Folk
Club and the Acoustic Harvest Folk Club. Things started to take shape from
that point to the present. I now split my sound engineering time between
working out in "the field" and in my recording studio.
I feel that I've developed the skills necessary to help musicians get their music
across to an audience. In live sound my goal is to make the musicians loud enough to
be heard by the audience while still maintaining the natural sound of
the artist. In recording I work to capture that same natural sound on
CD. I've always believed that a good sound engineer goes unnoticed.
When the artist is allowed to shine and the listener forgets about all
the technical aspects involved, then I've done my job well.
I am also a musician, which
I believe is an important advantage for any engineer. It helps us to
better understand the perspective of the artist. I've played in
various situations in the past including a stint with a celtic band
called The Maritime Trio and it's offshoot The Maritimers, and in a duo
setting with a wonderful vocalist and songwriter named Anne Moffatt.
I played with The Jane Waynes for 4 years before we decided to fold in
December 2004. Currently, I play dobro in a band called The Great
Atomic Power (www.greatatomicpower.com)
with 3 great vocalists - Tory Cassis, Dave Matheson, Murray Foster, and
drummer Mark Mariash. We do a unique blend of jazz, folk and
traditional country music. I've also been recording and performing
with an awesome Singer/Songwriter named Rosemary Phelan (www.myspace.com/rosemaryphelan). Please visit the clients' page to check out other artists I've worked with.
